confident of raising funds for this purpose, and apart from the great difficulty of finding a suitable house to rent, and the extremely high rentals now asked, he points out that any house which the Directorate might acquire would need extensive altera- -tion to accommodate it to the purposes of a school. He would naturally prefer the grant of a free site upon which a thorough- -ly suitable school-house might be erected with such funds as he can obtain.

I sympathise with his wishes, and I recog- -nise that the school meets a definite want in the Colony, which is not supplied by either of the two Government Schools for girls one of which (Belilios) is essentially for Chinese girls (though others are not excluded) while the Kowloon School is for girls of pure European parentage. The majority of those who attend the Diocesan School though returned as "Europeans" are in fact of mixed race.

No available and suitable site on Hongkong Island has been suggested to me, with the exception of one close to the existing location of the school. This is valued at $24,409, a sum too large for the school supporters to provide, and to an equal degree a large call on the Colony if it were granted free of payment. It is moreover somewhat cramped, with little or no room for a play ground. The Bishop, however, informs me that he has no objection to a site in Kowloon, and after a personal inspection I have the honour to recommend to you that the site (B-1) as shewn on the attached plan should be granted free on the conditions attached.

This area forms part of "King's Park", and under the terms of the "Lewis Agreement" clause 2 on page 4 it was arranged that the Military Authorities should withdraw such shadowy claims to it as they might have provided that the Colonial Government did not alienate it to any other purpose than that of a "Park".
